RagingWire Data Centers, the nation's premier data center provider, today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent 8,212,401 covering a system and method for consistently providing power throughout a facility without the risk of power interruption. This patented technology is the core of RagingWire’s N-MatrixTM monitoring and management system and 2N+2 architecture.

Power distribution systems are used in facilities to convert transmitted high voltage energy supplied by the power utility to energy that is suitable for its intended use and to deliver that energy within the facility. These facilities (e.g., hospitals, data centers, etc.) have a load (e.g., computers, heating and air conditioning equipment, etc.) to which the energy is delivered by the power distribution system. The RagingWire patent provides for a design that allows out of service maintenance of critical equipment without a reduction in redundancy.
The patented design enables a data center architecture that RagingWire describes as 2N+2. This highly available approach has two redundant paths (2N) from the utility power to the server rack and a collection of interconnected bus network topologies that provide dynamic access to a pool of generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), and batteries. This bus topology design is described in the industry as an N+2 configuration where N is the number of devices you need and 2 is the number of available spare devices. The 2N+2 architecture combined with RagingWire’s programmable logic controllers (PLCs) forms N-Matrix, the monitoring and management system embedded throughout RagingWire’s data center campuses.
Charles Linkhart, RagingWire’s chief engineer and primary inventor in the patent award, said, “For high-availability data centers, 2N is not enough. This patent is the foundation for RagingWire’s unique 2N+2 technology which allows any active component – UPS, generator, chiller, pump, fan, switchboard – to be removed from service, then experience a utility outage, and then have any other active component fail, all without a loss of power or cooling to the server rack.”
